Hundreds of weddings and events later, I think about that a lot. Not because I need to prove anything. But because it's a pretty  good reminder of what happens when you stop letting other  people decide what's possible for you. 

She was mistaken.

Which isn’t a bad way to approach a wedding either.

She told me that wasn't a real job. 

In seventh grade,
I told my teacher I wanted to plan parties for a living.

My own wedding didn’t follow the usual traditions, and I loved every minute of it. Breakfast reception Forest Park, where we had our first date. Photos of just the two of us drinking margaritas at our favorite Mexican restaurant. 

It changed the way I thought about weddings and showed me how much more meaningful it feels when the day is planned around the people actually getting married.

That lesson followed me into every wedding I've planned since. Not every wedding needs margaritas before noon, obviously, but every wedding does need choices that feel honest to the couple making them.
